Hostomel Lyceum No. 1 has joined the “100 Solar Schools” environmental initiative, achieving energy independence through the installation of a hybrid solar power station provided by the Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation. The lyceum is now equipped with 54 solar panels with a capacity of 24.3 kW and batteries (energy storage systems) with a capacity of 41.6 kWh, allowing it to operate autonomously for up to four hours during power outages.
For the school, which sustained significant damage during the occupation of Hostomel, this installation marks a significant step toward recovery and development. The station offers considerable cost savings on electricity (up to €3,000 per year) and reduces CO2 emissions by 382 tons over 25 years, promoting environmental sustainability and supporting the community's renewal.
The project also includes an educational course on “Sustainable Development and Green Energy,” where students gained knowledge and skills in resource-efficient practices, fostering the growth of an environmentally conscious generation in Ukraine.
Yuliana Onyshchuk, founder of the foundation, emphasized the importance of such initiatives: “We are building a future where our children will have light, even when darkness surrounds us. Together with our partners, we support our schools and communities on the path to resilience and growth.”
This project was made possible with support from the Stabilization Platform, a program commissioned by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany. This is a vital step in supporting education and sustainable development in Ukrainian schools. It’s also part of broader efforts to restore and strengthen resilience in Ukraine under German government initiatives, including the Stabilisation Platform and GIZ’s Renewables for Resilient Ukraine (R2U).
Octopus Energy also partners with the Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation, supporting projects to install renewable energy systems and energy storage systems in schools and hospitals across Ukraine.
The technical partner of the project is Rodina Energy Group.
