On November 19, 2024, the official opening of a grid-tied solar power station (SPS) took place at one of the healthcare facilities in Rivne region. The installation was carried out by the Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation as part of the foundation’s “50 Solar Hospitals” campaign.
The healthcare facility provides a wide range of medical services, from consultations and diagnostic studies to surgical assistance and rehabilitation programs.
The solar station was built in two phases, serving both the outpatient department and the main building. The first phase was implemented by the Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation under the project "Renewable Energy for a Resilient Ukraine," executed by a consortium of civil society organizations in collaboration with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German government. During the first phase, 90 solar panels with a total capacity of 52.65 kW were installed on the outpatient department's roof. This building hosts daily consultations, examinations, and treatments by various specialists for local residents. The solar station covers about 18% of the building’s electricity needs, enabling savings of approximately €10,390 annually on electricity bills and reducing CO2 emissions by 970 tons over 25 years.
Thanks to successful cooperation and co-financing by the Rivne City Council, the second phase of the solar power station was also completed. It supplies electricity to the main building, which houses the surgical department, inpatient units, and intensive care and rehabilitation blocks. On the roof of the main building, 124 panels with a capacity of 73.16 kW were installed, covering 23.6% of the building’s electricity needs. This allows the facility to save around €13,680 per year, which can be redirected to other needs. Additionally, CO2 emissions are expected to decrease by 1,280 tons over 25 years.
Yuliana Onishchuk, founder and director of the Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation, commented:
“Our goal is to ensure that healthcare facilities can operate independently even in wartime conditions, providing help to everyone in need. Installing this solar power station at a medical facility in Rivne Region is not just about energy security and cost savings; it’s about collaboration and unity. This project was made possible thanks to our foundation's partners and fruitful cooperation with the city’s community. Rivne is a new region for our projects, and we are delighted to contribute to its journey toward sustainability and energy independence. We are grateful to everyone who supported this project and will continue our mission for a resilient future for Ukraine.”
The Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation participated in the "Renewable Energy for a Resilient Ukraine" project, implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German government. GIZ, the German Agency for International Cooperation, oversees various initiatives commissioned by the German government. One such initiative is the International Climate Initiative (IKI), under which the project "Renewable Energy for a Resilient Ukraine" is being executed by a consortium of organizations, including Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation, Ecoclub, Ecoaction, and RePower Ukraine.
